Tenant in Situ scheme gutted by Government inaction
Tenant in Situ scheme gutted by Government inaction - The Labour Party
Labour’s Housing Spokesperson Conor Sheehan TD has slammed Government following the news that new applications for the Tenant in Situ scheme in Fingal Council. This means that families facing eviction are once again being left in limbo, with nowhere to turn and no time to spare. Labour is calling for urgent action to expand the Tenant in Situ scheme across the country.
Deputy Sheehan said:
“Labour has been warning for weeks that the Tenant in Situ scheme is underfunded. The pause in Fingal is a stark signal that this Government is abandoning renters once again.
“Evictions from the private rental sector are continuing unchecked, and instead of responding with urgency, the Government is gutting the scheme that could offer a lifeline. Families who should be protected are left in limbo, with applications mired in bureaucracy and most destined to fail.
“In Limerick, for example, I have confirmed that 107 Tenant in Situ cases are currently on hold. Only 20 to 25 are expected to be completed this year. That means desperate families are wasting time they cannot afford – time they should be spending trying to find a safe place to live.
“For five months, the new Housing Minister has done nothing to address these cases. Worse, the Government has refused to engage seriously with Labour’s proposals. We submitted a four-part plan to tackle the housing crisis. We’ve shared our manifesto. We’ve offered constructive solutions. But it’s like shouting into the void.
“This failure of policy has real consequences. Labour is calling for immediate action to expand and streamline the Tenant in Situ scheme, to end no-fault evictions, and to ensure families are never left without a roof over their heads. It’s time for the Government to stop ignoring reality – and start listening to the people they claim to serve. They must act now.”
