- Government chaos on student fees Students left in the lurch again
Labour’s Further and Higher Education Spokesperson Senator Laura Harmon has called on Government to immediately reverse its planned hike in student fees, after the Minister failed to provide clarity in the Seanad today. Labour is demanding the Government use the €1.8 billion surplus in the National Training Fund to protect access to affordable third-level education.
Senator Harmon said:
“It seems we are hurtling towards yet another U-turn from this chaotic Coalition. After backtracking on Rent Pressure Zones and tax policy, the latest retreat involves college fees – a move that will hammer students and families already struggling with the cost of living.
“On 1st April, the Irish Times reported that Minister Lawless intended to cut the €1,000 rebate for student fees. That warning was clear. So if Fine Gael are now shocked, it’s either political theatre, or they weren’t paying attention. Either way, students are being let down by a divided and disorganised Government.
“The Minister’s failure to give a straight answer in the Seanad today raises serious questions. This looks like another case of kicking the can down the road – hoping the backlash dies down before another stealth hike is pushed through.
“During a cost-of-living crisis, with grocery bills up over 5% and average rents soaring past €2,000 per month, increasing student fees will deepen inequality and limit access to higher education. It’s simply wrong.
“The Government is sitting on a €1.8 billion surplus in the National Training Fund – money earmarked for education. There is no excuse. That fund must be used now to support students and keep fees low.
“And what of the promises made before the last election? Simon Harris told us he wanted to reduce student fees to zero. Where is that vision now? Instead, this Government boasts of budget surpluses while telling students and their families to tighten their belts once again.
“Labour is calling for an immediate reversal of this fee hike plan. Government must commit to fair, affordable access to third-level education for all – and start by using the National Training Fund surplus to protect students now.”
