Labour demands stronger EU action on Gaza - The Labour Party

  • Horizon suspension must go further

Labour’s Eoghan Kenny TD has said the European Commission must go further following its proposal to partially suspend Israel from the Horizon Europe research programme, citing the “severe” humanitarian crisis in Gaza. With the death toll now surpassing 60,000 and a man-made famine spreading, Labour is demanding that all EU funding be fully suspended and that Israel be isolated economically, culturally and academically.

Deputy Kenny said:

“We’ve all looked on in horror as the livestreamed genocide in Gaza unfolds. The European Commission’s proposal to partially suspend Israel from Horizon is welcome, but it does not go nearly far enough. This horror demands full action. Every day, families are bombed, starved and brutalised – and yet EU institutions continue to hesitate.

“Today, the genocide in Gaza has reached a new, horrific milestone: more than 60,000 people have now been killed. Aid is blocked at borders, children are starving, and entire neighbourhoods are reduced to rubble. Starvation is being used as a tactic of war. It is shameful.

“We in Labour have been consistent in calling for Israel to be isolated – culturally, academically, in sport, and now economically. There are no words to fully describe the horrors being inflicted in Gaza.

“Ireland must show leadership. Ireland is a small country but we have fierce diplomatic power and we must use it now to end the horrors that continue to unfold in front of our eyes in Gaza. The EU must stand with Palestinian children and civilians.”
