Housing crisis driving young people abroad - The Labour Party

Labour’s Conor Sheehan TD is warning that Ireland is facing a national emergency as a wave of young people consider leaving the country in search of a better quality of life. In the wake of the National Youth Council of Ireland’s (NYCI) research showing that 3 out of 5 young people under 25 are thinking of emigrating.
Deputy Sheehan said:
“This is profoundly depressing. We are seeing a generation kept in place by promises, yet pushed to the brink by the reality of the housing crisis. For three in five of our young people to even consider leaving the country, we have failed them.
“They are born into a country with full employment, yet even when jobs are available, decent homes are out of reach. We claim economic success, but the reality is that the system is stacked against the very people who should be our future.
“84% of under-25s surveyed blame the housing crisis for their uncertainty about staying here. That’s not just a statistic — it’s a clarion call. Our economy may have jobs, but without homes and real hope, what’s the point? Government must work to prevent the brain drain.
“We must act now. My call to Government is clear: launch a comprehensive youth housing strategy and invest in measures that truly support young people. The future of our nation depends on it.”
