Harmon calls for real action after shocking Cork assaults - The Labour Party
Labour’s Senator Laura Harmon has expressed deep shock and anger following the violent attack on two drag performers in Cork city over the weekend. She has called for urgent action from the Minister for Justice to ensure that everyone in Ireland can feel safe and respected, regardless of who they are.
Senator Harmon said:
“I’m deeply shocked and angered by the assault on two drag performers in Cork city. These are people who bring joy, art, and colour to our communities — they deserve to feel safe and supported, not targeted for who they are. No one should feel unsafe walking down the street in Cork or anywhere in Ireland.
“This incident is a stark reminder that hate and violence are still very real in our society. The question now is: what is the Minister for Justice going to do about it? Words are not enough — we need a clear plan of action to make our communities safer for LGBTQ+ people, for minorities, and for anyone who faces hate or intimidation.
“Cork must be a city where everyone feels safe, respected, and proud of who they are. This attack runs completely counter to the values of inclusion and equality that define us as a city and as a nation. We need visible leadership and a coordinated response from Government and Gardaí to ensure this cannot happen again.
“Next Saturday, 1 November, I’ll be coordinating the Ireland Against Racism Carnival in Cork. It’s an event to celebrate unity, peace and respect for all — and while it is about standing against racism, it is also be about standing together against all forms of hate. Whether it’s racism, homophobia, transphobia or xenophobia, they all come from the same place of fear and division.
“I’m calling on everyone who can to join the carnival next weekend. Let’s come together to celebrate democracy, peace, love and respect — and send a clear message that Cork stands united against hate of every kind.”
