Clarity needed on Extra Time pilot for students with dyslexia and dyscalculia - The Labour Party

Labour’s Education Spokesperson Eoghan Kenny TD has called on the Minister for Education to urgently provide clarity on the details of the Extra Time Pilot under the Reasonable Accommodations at the Certificate Examinations (RACE) Scheme for 2026.

Deputy Kenny said that while the scheme has been announced, schools and families have yet to receive critical information — including which candidates will be eligible, how much additional time will be granted, and when schools will be informed.

He pointed out that with the closing date for reactivation and new applications set for 21 November, schools and students cannot afford to be left guessing.

Deputy Kenny said:

“Minister McEntee must urgently clarify the details of the Extra Time Pilot under the RACE Scheme. We know that this pilot is intended to support students with dyslexia, dyscalculia and other learning difficulties, but we still don’t know who will be included, how it will operate, or when the information will reach schools. That is completely unacceptable with just weeks to go before the application deadline.

“Schools, teachers and families are all trying to plan for next year’s Leaving Certificate, yet they’re being left in the dark about a key accommodation that could make all the difference for students who need additional support. Announcing a pilot without any detail is not good enough. Students deserve certainty, not confusion.

“The RACE Scheme exists to ensure fairness and accessibility in our examination system. But when the Department fails to communicate clear guidelines, it risks excluding the very students it’s supposed to help. Schools need time to prepare and advise parents properly, and that time is fast running out.

“Families of students with dyslexia or dyscalculia have waited a long time for progress on this issue. It is deeply unfair that they are now left in limbo while the Department sits on vital information. The Minister must confirm when details will be shared, how many students will be included in the pilot, and the amount of additional time to be provided.

“Every student deserves a fair chance to show their ability in the Leaving Certificate. The Minister must publish full details of the Extra Time Pilot and communicate them to schools before the November 21st deadline. Without clear information, this pilot risks failing the very students it was meant to support.”
