Labour calls for urgent humanitarian response as “dark hell” grips Sudan - The Labour Party

Labour’s Foreign Affairs Spokesperson Duncan Smith TD has said that Ireland and the international community must act urgently to respond to the deepening humanitarian crisis in Sudan, following credible reports of appalling massacres of civilians in the city of El Fasher.

Deputy Smith said:

“There is evidence of appalling massacres of civilians taking place in Sudan, particularly in the city of El Fasher. The UN’s Under-Secretary for Humanitarian Affairs, Tom Fletcher, described the situation there as having descended into an ‘even darker hell’. This horrifying statement underlines the scale of suffering now unfolding before the eyes of the world. Thousands of families are fleeing violence, and many are being forced into areas with little or no humanitarian assistance.

“The civil war in Sudan has now raged for more than two years, and the humanitarian situation has become catastrophic. Twenty-four million people are now without sufficient food, with millions displaced across borders and within Sudan itself. The deteriorating security situation will only bring more people to the brink of starvation and destitution. This demands a coordinated, multilateral response from the international community, including increased humanitarian support for Sudan and immediate access for aid agencies to reach those most in need. The United Nations and the European Union must also bring pressure to bear on the international backers of both sides in this vicious conflict.

“The situation in Sudan is one of the world’s worst humanitarian crises, yet it is receiving far too little international attention. I am calling on the Minister for Foreign Affairs to use Ireland’s influence within the EU and the UN to advocate for an immediate ceasefire, full humanitarian access, and sanctions on those who enable this senseless violence. We cannot stand idly by as Sudan descends further into darkness. The people of Sudan deserve peace, dignity, and hope – not silence from the world.”
