Gaza needs international law not political stunts - The Labour Party

Labour’s Foreign Affairs Spokesperson Duncan Smith TD has today warned that Ireland should be extremely cautious about Trump’s ‘Board of Peace’ or any alternative initiatives that risk undermining established international diplomacy. Deputy Smith called on the Government to to reject any approach that distracts from the urgent need to end the humanitarian catastrophe in Gaza.
Deputy Duncan Smith said:
“I have huge concerns about the so-called Board of Peace proposed by President Trump and I believe Ireland should be extremely wary of any involvement in such a project. This does not appear to be a neutral initiative. It represents a clear attempt to bypass the UN structures that already exist to support diplomacy, conflict resolution and humanitarian protection.
“The devastation in Gaza has shocked the world and demands a serious international response. The United Nations remains the only institution with the legitimacy, experience and global mandate to lead efforts towards a just and lasting peace. Any attempt to sideline or weaken the UN at a moment like this is deeply irresponsible and risks prolonging suffering for civilians who are already enduring unimaginable hardship.
“It is incredibly important that international attention remains firmly focused on Gaza. The scale of civilian suffering, the destruction of infrastructure and the ongoing denial of basic humanitarian needs demand sustained global engagement.
“Ireland has a proud history of standing up for Palestine and people here have been steadfast in their support. The people of Palestine do not need political theatrics. They need protection, international support, aid and a genuine pathway to lasting peace.”
