Legal gaps must be addressed following X controversy - The Labour Party

Chairperson of the Oireachtas Media Committee and Labour TD Alan Kelly has welcomed news that Government will address legal gaps and loopholes to address AI generated sexual abuse imagery.

Deputy Kelly said:

“It’s welcome that the Taoiseach, Tánaiste, Ministers for AI and Justice are heeding the caution issued by the Labour Party on the Grok controversy. It has brought into the forefront of the public’s mind that stronger legislation is needed to address gaps in our legal framework as it relates to AI generated imagery.

“It’s welcome to see the Government group agree to use the EU Presidency to bring this issue to the forefront. We need to work at a European and International level to take on nefarious platforms, however in the interest of speed and protecting people it is my view that emergency legislation needs to be introduced to deal with this immediately.

“We need robust laws to deal with platforms like Grok and the many others that operate in a similar manner.

“Finally it is deeply disappointing that X has refused to attend the Oireachtas Committee to address the questions and concerns of elected representatives. I’m once again calling on the Taoiseach to intervene, to call on X to attend and to send a clear message to all platforms that Ireland takes safety seriously.”
