Minister must scrap voluntary contributions - The Labour Party

Labour education spokesperson Deputy Eoghan Kenny today called on the Minister for Education to scrap voluntary contributions in schools, warning that proposals for a new statutory charter on transparency dodge the real issue of chronic underfunding and place an unfair and growing burden on families already struggling with the cost of living.

Deputy Eoghan Kenny said:

“The Minister says she wants schools to be more transparent about voluntary contributions, but transparency does nothing for parents who simply cannot afford them. The truth is that these so-called voluntary contributions should not exist at all. Schools should not have to rely on them just to keep the lights on.

“Parents receive letters that may say voluntary, but the pressure is real and the costs are significant. For families already facing high rents, childcare bills and energy costs, these charges add up quickly.

“Labour has been clear and consistent in calling for an end to voluntary contributions. Our Constitution specifically provides for free primary education, yet the reality for many parents is that free education exists only on paper. In practice, families are asked to pay for heating, cleaning, insurance, IT and day-to-day school supplies. That is an outrageous situation in a modern republic.

“The Minister’s focus on accountability and transparency misses the point. What parents need is relief, not another charter that leaves the same unfair system in place. By refusing to address the core problem of underfunding, the Government continues to tolerate a two-tier experience where some schools cope and others struggle, and where children’s opportunities depend on their postcode and their parents’ bank balance.

“Every child in the State deserves equal access to a quality education, and every parent deserves certainty that sending their child to school will not come with extra bills for essentials. If the State stopped funding private fee-paying schools and directed all public money into fully funding public education, we would not be having this debate about voluntary contributions at all. Labour is calling on the Government to act now, end these unfair charges, and finally deliver on the promise of truly free education.”
