Government back Bill to support teachers and SNAs injured at work
Government back Bill to support teachers and SNAs injured at work - The Labour Party
- Senator Laura Harmon’s Bill to support teachers injured at work passes 2nd Stage of the Seanad
The Education (Leave for Injuries) Bill 2025 seeks to extend paid leave for education staff who experience an injury in the classroom.
Senator Harmon welcomes the cross-party support Labour’s bill has received in the Seanad, she said:
“Today we made great progress towards better treatment of our teachers and SNAs in this country. This Bill will provide support for the staff in our schools who find themselves injured in the classroom; It will make sure individuals have access to proper medical care and the time to recover. We must ensure these people are financially supported throughout their medically certified leave.”
“I would like to commend Sophie Cole from Carrigaline yet again on her campaigning efforts on this. Sophie was let down by the current system when she received an injury in the classroom. We hope that no teacher or SNA has to fight for appropriate leave moving forward.”
“I am urging the Government parties to allow this Bill to pass through the remaining stages. This is a piece of legislation that, if enacted, would address the unfair treatment faced by staff in the education sector. These disparities have been allowed to go on for too long.
“I will be in contact with Minister Hildegarde Naughton on this Bill moving forward. It is vital we collaborate on this to pass this Bill through further Stages with any recommended amendments.”
