Evictions to surge to levels not seen before unless Government takes decisive action - The Labour Party

Labour Housing Spokesperson Conor Sheehan TD has said that the latest Irish Independent/REA Average House Price index should be sobering for the Government and unless the Minister takes decisive action, evictions will surge to levels not seen before.

Deputy Sheehan was speaking after the REA report which highlights how house prices continue to rise as landlords leave the private rented market.

“Three weeks after the Ministers bungled rental reforms came into force and already we are seeing record evictions with a huge shortage of family homes.

“I do not accept the argument from Government that it is necessary to throw renters to the wolves in order to stimulate supply in the private sector.

“We are already seeing large developers pause contracts due to the volatility in the Middle East which has immediately thrown a spanner in the works for the Minister.

“What we need is a moratorium on evictions until the rental market stabilises and supply improves. If Government fails to come forward with legislation in this regard, the Labour Party will.

“Renters in this country are the most vulnerable people in the housing system. All renters need protection from eviction and from obscene rent increases.

“The Minister must take decisive action, we need to see a moratorium on evictions to protect renters from impending homelessness now.”
