Cork Luas must move from consultation to construction now – Kenny - The Labour Party
Labour Eoghan Kenny TD has welcomed the launch of public consultation on the preferred route for the Cork Luas, describing it as a significant milestone for the city, while calling for urgent Government action to ensure the project is fully funded and delivered without delay.
Deputy Kenny said:
“The launch of the public consultation on the preferred route for the Cork Luas is an extremely positive step forward and one that has been a long time coming for the people of Cork.
“There is particular importance to Ballincollig in Cork North Central, which will see significant development and investment as part of this route. This is a major opportunity to transform public transport, reduce congestion, and support sustainable growth across the city. People in our communities want to see ambition matched with delivery, and that is exactly what must happen now.
“The work carried out by Transport Infrastructure Ireland has laid a strong foundation for this project, but that work must now be backed up by firm commitments from Government. The Department of Transport must step up and ensure that the necessary funding is in place to bring this project from planning to construction. Without that commitment, progress risks stalling, and that cannot be allowed to happen.
“We need to be clear about timelines. Labour is ambitious for this project and believes that work should begin by 2030, we have been calling for this. That is a realistic and necessary target if we are serious about addressing transport challenges in Cork. Delays have held this project back for too long and people are rightly frustrated. We now have an opportunity to move forward with purpose and deliver a modern, efficient public transport system for the city.”
“I’m encouraging everyone across Cork to engage with the consultation process, to have their say, and to help shape a Luas system that works for their communities. Government must listen, must act, and must commit the funding needed now to ensure that Cork Luas becomes a reality.”
