O'Donovan must fight for fairness for Ireland's independent radio stations - The Labour Party

Chairperson of the Oireachtas Media Committee Labour Deputy Alan Kelly has called on Minister Patrick O’Donovan to protect the future of Ireland’s independent radio stations.

Responding to the increaseed levy due to be impossed on radio stations, Deputy Kelly said:

“What’s being proposed by Coimisún na Meán demands Minister O’Donovan’s attention. He needs to step up now and protect the future of Ireland’s independent radio stations. A 39% increase is a step too far for too many, particularly when the radio advertising market is growing at a slow rate.

“We need joined up and common sense thinking from Coimisún na Meán. During Covid, Government suspended the BAI levy for local radio stations giving them some immediate relief – but this will be in vain if the proposed increase is allowed to go ahead.

“As a Committee we will look to work with the independent radio sector to chart a sustainable way forward that protects and supports our democracy.”
