Children with additional needs cannot be left behind - The Labour Party

Labour EducationSpokesperson Eoghan Kenny TD has welcomed confirmation from the Minister for Education that the revised 2014 SNA Circular, the Workforce Development Plan, and the redeployment scheme will be published before the summer recess.

Speaking following questions to the Minister this morning, Deputy Kenny said:

“I welcome the Minister’s confirmation that these long-awaited plans will be published before the summer recess. It is positive to hear the extent of engagement that has taken place with SNAs, Fórsa, school management bodies, parents, and school communities.”

Deputy Kenny said the publication of the plans is an important step following the outcry of support for SNA’s and our children earlier this year about proposed reductions in SNA allocations.

“The Labour Party led the campaign at the beginning of this year to stop the cull of SNAs across the country. Our position has always been clear, we must plan before we cut.”

“For a long time, we have called for these plans to be published so that schools, parents, and SNAs can properly understand the direction of travel. Once published, we will closely examine them to ensure they reflect the reality on the ground in our schools and the growing needs of students.”

Deputy Kenny also called on the Minister to prioritise additional investment in Special Needs Assistants in the next Budget.

“The Minister must now ensure that Budget 2027 delivers additional SNAs to match the increasing level of need right across the country. Schools are under enormous pressure, and children with additional needs must receive the support they deserve.”
