Long overdue update to SNA role welcome but must represent start of the process - The Labour Party

Labour Spokesperson on Education, Eoghan Kenny TD, has welcomed the publication of the Department of Education’s SNA Workforce Development Plan, while stressing that its success will depend on meaningful implementation and continued engagement with SNAs, schools and families.

Deputy Kenny said:

“I welcome this plan in principle. For too long, Special Needs Assistants have not received the recognition, professional development opportunities or career pathways they deserve. Today’s announcement is an important acknowledgement of the invaluable work they do in our schools every day.

“While I welcome the recognition of the role that SNAs already play in our schools, it is important to acknowledge that this role did not evolve because schools misunderstood previous guidance. It evolved because SNAs, school staff and parents worked tirelessly to meet the needs of children and young people. Any new framework must recognise that reality and be developed in partnership with those on the frontline.

“However, the real test will be in its implementation. We need to ensure that the commitments made by Government translate into meaningful improvements on the ground for SNAs, school communities and, most importantly, the children and young people they support.

“I raised this issue directly with the Minister in the Dáil last week because Labour has led on this issue from the very beginning. When concerns emerged around changes to SNA allocations, Labour stood firmly with SNAs, parents and school communities in demanding clarity, consultation and fairness. We will continue to hold Government to account to ensure this plan delivers in practice.

“As a former teacher, I know first-hand the essential role SNAs play in our schools. They are often the difference between a child being able to fully participate in education or not. They provide support, care, stability and encouragement to students every single day. Their contribution cannot be overstated.

“I want to acknowledge the work of Fórsa, the Save Our SNAs campaign, SNAs across the country, school staff, principals, teachers and parents who have consistently advocated for recognition and investment in this workforce. Their voices have been crucial in bringing us to this point.

“Today’s announcement is welcome, but it must be the beginning rather than the end of the process. Labour will continue to work with SNAs and school communities to ensure these proposals are delivered properly and that every child receives the support they need to thrive in education.”
