Senator Laura Harmon calls for proper recognition for the rights of Irish disabled people at UN in New York - The Labour Party
Senator Harmon said:
“As Labour spokesperson on disability, it was a privilege to attend the Conference of State Parties to the Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities.
“This brought together advocates, policymakers, and representatives from around the world to discuss how we can build more inclusive societies.
“Disability rights are human rights. I was honoured to join the Irish delegation to attend this conference at the United Nations in New York and put a spotlight on this issue with my colleagues from the Oireachtas Committee on Disability.
“We must introduce an adequate cost of disability payment which reflects the true cost of disability and people’s lived experience.
“It was valuable to hear perspectives from across the globe and learn from those leading the fight for greater accessibility and equality. We also met the Ambassador at Ireland’s Permanent Mission to the United Nations, and we had a roundtable with Minister Emer Higgins. I am hopeful that with actions like these we can deliver with and for the disabled community and address cost of living and accessibility issues.
“Too many disabled people continue to face barriers to education, employment, healthcare, housing sport and participation in public life. There is so much work to do to ensure disabled people are meaningfully included in decision-making and that rights translate into action.”
