State purchase of the old Carlton Cinema site must herald redevelopment of Moore Street and O’Connell Street - The Labour Party
Labour TD for Dublin Central Marie Sherlock has described the State purchase of the old Carlton Cinema site as a “game changer”, saying it must herald a new era in the redevelopment of O’Connell Street and Moore Street.
Deputy Sherlock said:
“It’s hugely welcome news that the State has purchased the old Carlton Cinema site. This needs to be a game changer for O’Connell Street and Moore Street areas – areas that badly need redevelopment and have been starved of Government attention.
“The non-redevelopment of Moore Street has served nobody well over the last two decades. The street has been allowed to fall into a state of dilapidation and there has been a dearth of investment in the area.
“The purchase the Carlton site must now represent a step-change in how the Moore Street and O’Connell Street areas have been treated. We need to see redevelopment of all of the Moore Street area that is both fitting to its history and ambitious for the potential vibrancy and diversity of the Street.
“I am also aware of a Judicial Review currently on sites three, four and five, but the reality is that site 2, encompassing sites 2a and 2b, provided for redevelopment for offices and redevelopment, is going to be critical to the success of the Moore Street redevelopment as a whole.
“We need the State to take full control of all these sites now and drive on with a sensitive redevelopment of the area.
“Just last month, Lonely Planet described O’Connell Street as a ‘troubled street’ with ‘visible drug use’. There has been an utter dereliction of duty from the State when it comes to protecting, supporting and redeveloping O’Connell Street and Moore Street. This needs to end.”
