Why I got involved in politics
I was raised in a Labour household, but got involved in party affairs myself, when after my campaigning in the anti-nuclear movement, I knew that real social change can only be brought about by political action.
Labour was and remains the obvious vehicle for me to bring about the social progress that I believe in.
My priorities
Continue to serve my constituency and the Labour party in the areas over which I have responsibility.
My background
I have been honoured to have been elected to Dail Eireann for the constituency of Wexford in nine consecutive General Elections and to have served in three Cabinets as Minister for the Environment, Health and Public Expenditure and Reform.
I have been elected Mayor of Wexford and Leas Cheann Comhairle of Dail Eireann. I have been privileged to serve as Labour Party Whip, Deputy Leader and between 2016 to 2020 as Leader of the Labour Party.
Each of these positions have afforded me the opportunity to serve my county, my country and my Party.
