Why I got involved in politics
Politics has always been part of my life. Growing up in a politically engaged family, discussions about democracy and social justice were common at home. My journey in activism started when I was elected as Vice President for Welfare in CIT Students’ Union, where I worked on key issues like mental health and student rights. From advocating for marriage equality to campaigning for reproductive rights, and better pay and conditions for professionals working in the Early Years Sector. I’ve always believed in standing up for what’s right. Now, I want to bring that passion to local government, working to create a fairer, more inclusive Cork.
My priorities
Childcare is a major challenge for families today due to a lack of available places, high costs, and low wages for workers. I will advocate for increased investment in early childhood education and better pay for caregivers.
Women’s healthcare also needs urgent improvement, including earlier access to BreastCheck screenings, better maternal health support, and paid leave for pregnancy loss. Long waiting lists for gynecological and reproductive healthcare require significant investment and reform.
Housing is another critical issue, as many young professionals and families struggle to find affordable homes, often living in overcrowded conditions.
Additionally, I will address the healthcare crisis, particularly the long waiting lists at CUH, and work on improving public transport, reducing dereliction, and creating a dementia-aware community to support our aging population.
My background
I live in Bishopstown, which is part of the Cork City South West Ward. I am not far from where I studied at Cork Institute of Technology, now known as Munster Technological University. My background is in education and community activism; I have worked in the Early Years sector and with various advocacy groups. I have campaigned for Marriage Equality and the repeal of the Eighth Amendment, as well as campaigning with the Labour Party in recent years. I have always been driven by the values of equality and justice, and I hope to continue that work as a councillor for Cork City South West.
