About me

My name is John Lonergan and I have lived in Finglas East my whole life. I will be the youngest candidate standing in the Ballymun-Finglas area at 19 years of age.

I went to Mother of Divine Grace Primary School in Ballygall and St. Kevin's College.

I currently study Law and Politics.

Why I got involved in politics

I got involved in politics because I want to see younger voices represented on the Council. I believe we are currently being neglected and that we need a young advocate to act on our behalf. Our generation needs to be represented at the decision making level and I believe I can be that representative.

I have always been interested in politics because I have always wondered about how we are affected by how governments and politicians affect the way we live our lives. I think the best way to effect positive change is to get involved and put the shoulder to the wheel.

My priorities

Housing

The lack of affordable housing is causing huge anger, disappointment and frustration for so many. It has caused many to emigrate or move to other areas of the country. We need more affordable homes to rent and buy so people can get on with their lives knowing they have a secure roof over their heads. Dublin City Council needs more money and support to build more affordable homes in our area.

More Local Amenities

This area should be an area that everyone can stay active in. Many of our sports facilities need upgrading. More girls are now playing sports but too often we don’t have enough playing pitches and we lack pitch-side changing facilities. We need to work collaboratively with Dublin City Council to improve our local parks, our community centers and playing spaces.

A Just Transition

We need a fair and just climate transition that leaves no-one behind - your income shouldn’t determine how energy efficient your home is when everyone needs to reduce energy use and keep warm. I support Metro North and Bus Connects but these are medium-term options and Dublin City Council needs to do things in the short term. I will also push Dublin City Council for segregated cycle lanes and better footpaths in our area so people have alternative options to using their car.

Clubs and Committees

I played football for the Willows Football Club for about 7 years.
