Why I got involved in politics
Johnnie was co-opted onto Westmeath County Council in 2002 and has been re-elected in all local elections since. Johnnie grew up in Ballynacargy and got involved in Labour Party politics at an early age along with his brother Willie who had already been deeply involved.
Johnnie is currently a councillor with responsibilities for the Athlone / Moate Municipal District. Johnnie is a committed and experienced public representative and has represented the people of Westmeath for many years.
Johnnie is a member of the Royal Canal (which runs through Ballynacargy) Amenity Group and continues to be involved with the maintenance of the beautiful and picturesque amenity.
My priorities
Johnnies priorities include tackling the crisis in housing; the return of local banking and health services and securing more Gardai for rural areas. Johnnie is committed to addressing climate change and promoting biodiversity and sustainability for the people of Westmeath. Johnnie has been active in ensuring funding is secured for the construction and maintenance of the various loop walks and cycle paths that are now spread across Westmeath.
He is working to improve local transport so that Westmeath can have quality public transport and safe cycleways to further enhance its communities and streets.
My background

Former Vice Chairperson of the Mullingar Area Committee. Member of Midlands Regional Authority (incorporating the Midland East Regional Tourism Authority). Former Chair of Westmeath County Council.
