Labour Disability has welcomed the final step taken in Dáil Éireann last night to ratify the UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities. Ireland will now join 175 countries around the world who have already ratified the UNCRPD.

Labour Disability notes however, that there is a lot of outstanding legislation that will be required to give force to this ratification.

Labour Disability chairperson Michael Keegan stated:

“There is much work to be done to ensure the equal treatment of people with disabilities, who continue to be denied liberties and rights that everyone else enjoys.

“The ratification on the UNCRPD is a welcome step forward for people with disabilities. It has taken eleven years of campaigning to get to this date and we cannot rest here.  The International Community is watching us now there is much more work to be done to make sure that Ireland complies with this Convention.”
