Today @ 11am: Labour to launch Plain Language Bill with NALA
Labour Party Education spokesperson Aodhán Ó Ríordáin will launch the Public Sector (Plain Language) Bill today, Tuesday, 29th January, at 11am. This launch will take place in Buswells Hotel with Inez Bailey and Michael Power from the National Adult Literacy Agency available to speak to reporters on the issue.
Senator Ó Ríordáin’s Bill aims to make public documents accessible to everyone. Often those with greater literacy challenges are the ones who need public services the most. There is absolutely no need to have extra exclusionary boundaries by means of complicated language in official government forms, documents or publications.
With 17.9% of the Irish adult population functionally illiterate, it is clear that we must work harder to make all public services accessible.
The National Adult Literacy Agency (NALA) have been advocating for such a change for many years and they will be joining us on Tuesday as we launch our bill.
