Rising Rent in Waterford Among the Highest In Ireland – Time for a Rent Freeze

13 November 2019

Waterford Labour Cllr and Mayor of Waterford, John Pratt has said the Government has failed renters in Waterford, after the latest report from Daft showed yearly rent increases of 11.5 and 5.5 per cent in Waterford County and City, among the highest increases in the country.

Cllr Pratt commented:

“Rents in Waterford have risen to record levels in the past year, with renters now paying extortionate amounts of their income renting their homes.

“In just 12 months, rents in the county have risen by a whopping 11.5 per cent- that’s more than double the national average, while in Waterford city, average rents are also up by 5 and a half per cent.

“This is particularly problematic when you consider the other rising costs facing families such as childcare.

“After more than three years, it is clear that this Government has failed the people of Waterford once again in managing the rental crisis and providing enough homes for families.

“Before rents increase even further, I am calling on the Government to freeze rents across the country and to introduce maximum rents on a regional basis until enough homes have been built to tackle the housing crisis.

“Renters need a break, renters need certainty and renters need to be treated fairly.

“That is simply not happening under this Government.”
