Shannon group should have engaged with union before considering cutting jobs
The Shannon Group should have engaged with the Shannon Group of Unions before any restructuring plans that will involve redundancies and pay cuts were even considered according to Labour Spokesperson on Climate Action, Communications and Transport, Duncan Smith T.D.
Deputy Smith said:
“I am disappointed by the disgraceful decision of the Shannon Group to cut pay by up to 20% and to publish details of a voluntary redundancy scheme without even consulting the trade unions representing workers at the airport.
“I am calling on the Shannon Group to delay these redundancies and pay cuts at least until the aviation taskforce has completed its work and to engage with the Shannon Airport Group of trade unions to see if it will be possible to negotiate a restructuring plan without job losses.
“The lack of respect shown to Shannon Airport workers by the Shannon Group is deplorable and to publish a restructuring agreement without even speaking to the unions who represent the workers is not acceptable.
“The aviation taskforce has not yet completed its work and cutting staff in this manner could damage the long-term viability of the airport. I would also call on the new Transport Minister Eamon Ryan to adopt a hands-on approach, unlike his predecessor and to meet with the Shannon Group as a matter of urgency with a view to putting in place a sustainable plan for Shannon Airport.
Deputy Smith continued:
“The situation at Shannon Airport is very concerning with Aer Lingus having pulled out, at least temporarily and passenger numbers dropping by up to 70% this year and there are 15’000 job supported by the airport. The new Government need to engage with all relevant stakeholders including the Shannon Group and group of trade unions to ensure a package of support are put in place to safeguard the livelihoods of those dependent directly and indirectly on the airport.
