Schedule of events for Labour Party Away Day – Athy

Labour Trade Unionists
10 September 2021

The Labour Parliamentary Party is meeting in Athy to discuss our priorities and platform for the Oireachtas term ahead. Key issues include housing, climate, hospital waiting lists, education, care, and the need for a new social contract.

We will discuss the cost of living in Ireland and a new deal for workers, and hear on Monday afternoon from Dr Laura Bambrick of the Irish Congress of Trade Unions, and housing expert Professor Michelle Norris.

There will be a session to understand the lessons from the Dublin Bay South Bye-election, and we will launch our Renter’s Rights Bill which will be debated in the Dáil next week.

On Tuesday morning there will be a panel discussion on the challenges and opportunities in post-Covid Ireland with Ali Sheridan a sustainability and climate adviser, and Dr. Shana Cohen, Director of TASC.

We will also publish a new policy document, A New Deal for our Towns and Villages, a plan for revitalising Ireland’s urban centres, built on a survey of over 1,000 people. It outlines a series of policy proposals anchored on the restoration of town councils and local democracy and a social democratic approach to regeneration and enterprise supports.
