Contagion in tech industries a worrying sign for Ireland - The Labour Party
Labour’s enterprise spokesperson George Lawlor has expressed his solidarity with workers at Microsoft and LinkedIn based in Ireland following the announcement of global job cuts.
Deputy Lawlor said:
“The contagion that we are seeing in the tech industries is worrying given the numbers employed in the sector in Ireland. The uncertainty created by Trump’s folly is having a real impact on future planning by companies. It’s leading to stagnation and stalling of investment and it is those working in these organisations who will be paying the price.
“There is a real concern in terms of job losses in the tech sector and what it means for tech workers, but my greater concern is what impact these job cuts will have on companies that depend on the tech firms themselves.
“This is a time of great uncertainty in the labour market and it will be difficult for those who find themselves out of work, to get back on their feet in the short term.
“The global uncertainty is having real life consequences for the lives of people working for tech firms and other companies across Ireland. All the warning signs are there and Government must now heed them.
“As a country we need to get serious on developing a new national industrial policy that will continue to ensure that we can attract the kind of high quality foreign direct investment but it must also ensure good, secure, union jobs while also growing our indigenous enterprise base.”
