Ahern calls for crackdown on energy profiteering - The Labour Party

Labour’s Climate and Energy Spokesperson Ciarán Ahern TD today set out Labour’s priorities at the start of the new Dáil term, calling for urgent action on the cost of living, housing, and profiteering in the energy sector.

Speaking on the Plinth, Deputy Ahern said:

“The reality is that working people are under enormous pressure, and the choices Government makes in the upcoming Budget will show where their priorities really lie. Labour is clear – resources should be used to support households through targeted electricity credits, not wasted on tax cuts for multinationals who are already making record profits. This Budget is about political choices, and those choices must put people first.

“The cost of living has escalated dramatically, and many families feel like they are constantly running to stand still. That is why Labour will bring a Private Members’ Motion to the Dáil next week to force Government to confront this crisis head on.

“Companies in the energy sector are recording enormous profits while still raising prices. Why is this happening, and why is Government allowing it to continue unchecked? In the UK, every energy company is obliged to give the same tariff to existing customers as they do to new customers. That is a measure we should be looking at here.

“This is a moment of political choice. It is no longer acceptable for Government to stand idly by while energy companies hike bills and rake in profits. Labour is calling for urgent intervention to bring fairness to electricity pricing and rein in profiteering.”
