EU must stand up to Trump extortion on Greenland - The Labour Party

  • Threat of new tariffs effectively ends the EU-US trade deal agreed last year.
  • Clarity needed from Irish government on what plans are in place for a hard break in EU-US relations.

Responding to reckless tariff threats from the United States over Greenland, Labour Enterprise spokesperson George Lawlor said the EU and the Irish government must now stand up to the latest round of bullying and extortion from President Trump.

Deputy Lawlor said:

“By announcing new tariffs of 10% on 10 European countries with effect from 1st February unless a deal is reached to hand over Greenland to the United States, Trump is effectively ending the trade agreement that was agreed last year with the EU.

“The EU cannot give in to this latest round of bullying, and attempts at extortion. There is no certainty for business or exporters when such threats are used.

“Ireland and the EU must prepare for the risk of a chronic breakdown of relations with the United States and ensure measures are in place to support businesses and workers.

“The Irish government must now clarify what contingency plans and measures are in place in the event of a hard break with the US. We need to hear from the Taoiseach, Tánaiste and Minister for Enterprise on the back up plans they have in place.”
