Electricity bill increases must be absorbed by the providers - The Labour Party
Labour’s energy spokesperson Ciarán Ahern TD said households cannot face an additional €41 fee on their energy bills.
Following news that the CRU has approved an increase in network charges, Deputy Ahern said these costs must be absorbed by the energy companies.
Deputy Ahern said:
“Households are struggling as it is to keep up the pace of the increasing cost of living from house prices and rents, the cost of food and the enormous cost of energy bills. The increase in network charges announced by the CRU today is going to push too many families to the brink.
“In Budget 2026, families were abandoned by Fianna Fáil and Fine Gael. Energy credits, which were a lifeline to so many families, were done away with overnight. In May the Labour Party proposed a suite of cost of living measures, including a targeted energy credit, to protect those on the edges of the cost of living crisis.
“This increase to bills will only serve to push more and more people into debt, as we know that over 500,000 bills are already in arrears.
“All the while, energy companies have continued to increase fees, with Ireland now having the highest electricity prices in the European Union according to Eurostat.
“These companies must absorb the increase in the network fees. It cannot be tacked onto people’s household bills.
“Of course, the best protection for families against rising energy prices is investment in renewable energy and a modern electricity grid. However, we cannot stay silent while families are asked to take on yet another fee in their household bills.”
