Potential job losses at Boston Scientific deeply worrying sign - The Labour Party
Labour’s enterprise spokesperson George Lawlor TD has said the potential job losses at Boston Scientific are a very worrying sign as Trump’s tariffs continue to spread uncertainty across businesses globally.
Speaking today, Deputy Lawlor said:
“Boston Scientific has been a strong and important employer for many people in communities across the country and news of potential job losses will be deeply worrying the employees impacted, their families and their communities. My thoughts are with them as they enter this uneasy period.
“Management must engage in good faith and protect jobs where possible.
“This is a highly skilled and highly qualified workforce who look set to be casualties in the deep uncertainty that Trump’s tariffs are spreading internationally. There is no silver bullet to solve this challenge, but we do need to see a plan coming from Government to protect jobs in the face of this threat.
“As a country we need to get serious on developing a new national industrial policy that will continue to ensure that we can attract the kind of high quality foreign direct investment but it must also ensure good, secure, union jobs while also growing our indigenous enterprise base.
“For some time, Labour has called for the weekly wage cap for statutory redundancy to be increased from €600 to €1,000. The cap has not been reviewed or revised upwards in 20 years. It’s not a panacea, but as the contagion spreads, we must do all that we can to protect working people. I would urge the Minister to act on this, to support workers at risk of losing their jobs.”
