Labour Party Spokesperson on Education, Eoghan Kenny TD, has called for an increase in school capitation funding following reports that 71% of primary schools are operating at a deficit.
Deputy Kenny said:
“Schools are struggling to meet their most basic running costs, with principals forced to make difficult decisions about how limited resources are spent.
“Parents are already under enormous financial pressure. They should not be expected to subsidise heating, electricity, cleaning and essential classroom materials through voluntary contributions and fundraising.
“As a former teacher, I know the extraordinary efforts school communities make to raise funds, but keeping schools open and properly resourced is the responsibility of the State.
“The Labour Party will commit to increasing the school capitation grant in our forthcoming Alternative Budget.
“Every child deserves a properly resourced education, regardless of their family’s financial circumstances or their school’s ability to fundraise. The Government must deliver the funding our schools need in Budget 2027.”
