Budget 2027 must tackle housing crisis, not fuel higher prices - The Labour Party
- Increasing Help to Buy to €35,000 would hand more public money to developers and increase house prices
Labour housing spokesperson Conor Sheehan TD has criticised reports that Government plans to increase the maximum Help to Buy refund to €35,000 in tomorrow’s Budget.
Deputy Sheehan said:
“This Government is fresh out of ideas on housing. More than 17,000 people living in emergency accommodation, yet the Minister’s answer is another Help to Buy increase.
“Pumping more money into a market with too few homes fuels higher prices. An increase to €35,000 will hand developers more public money while leaving buyers chasing ever-soaring prices. Government cannot subsidise its way out of a housing shortage.
“In Labour’s Alternative Budget, we called for €6bn of the Apple windfall in the Land Development Agency and transform it into a State Construction Company to deliver tens of thousands of affordable homes.
“Government must stop recycling developer subsidies and fund social, affordable purchase and cost rental homes at scale. The Minister must put affordable homes and reducing homelessness ahead of inflationary subsidies.”
