Minister must clarify disability payment for over-66s now - Wall - The Labour Party

Labour social protection spokesperson Mark Wall TD has today called on the Minister for Social Protection to clarify whether people over 66 who have transferred from Invalidity Pension or other long-term illness payments to the State Pension will qualify for the new Cost of Disability payment announced in Budget 2027.

Deputy Wall said:

“My office has received a growing number of queries from people who previously received Invalidity Pension or other payments because of a disability or long-term illness and now receive the State Pension. People need a clear answer. They want to know whether they will qualify for this new support.

“These are people who continue to face the additional costs of disability. Reaching pension age does not remove those costs. Yet people now worry that this change could leave them outside the eligibility rules. The Minister must spell out whether they will qualify and how the Department will recognise their continuing needs.

“The Minister must publish clear eligibility rules without delay. Disability costs continue after 66.”
