Why I got involved in politics

I want to make Dublin a liveable city where you can work, raise a family and grow old. We should have a city that assures affordable housing and a strong public transport system, while providing space to have fun and be creative in an inclusive and sustainable way.

Climate change is going to be a major challenge for us all. The response to climate change must be fair and protect the most vulnerable. I believe we have to ensure a Just Transition to a low-carbon future. Ensuring fair access to quality education is a really important issue for me.

I want to guarantee adequate educational access for all.

My priorities

I believe that disabled people should be included and able to live full and equal lives. Nothing about us without us.

We have all learnt to value our parks during COVID, I want to protect and improve all local parks.

The area has a lot of transport chaos with questions over Metrolink, a lot of DART+ projects and the problems with bus connects. I will fight for public transport we all can use.

Education is really important and I will continue to fight for more choice and better facilities for education in the area.

My background

My name is Declan Meenagh. I live on Killala Road, and I am your new Labour Councillor representing Cabra/Glasnevin.

I joined the Council after Marie Sherlock was elected to Seanad Éireann last year, and I am working hard with her and Cllr Joe Costello to improve our community.

Ensuring fair access to quality education is a really important issue for me. I want to guarantee adequate educational access for all and I am proud to represent Dublin City Council on the board of Cabra Community College and Clonturk Community College, as well as on the City of Dublin Education and Training Board.

Good public transport is so important to me because I am visually impaired. I know the issues we have with public transport and I want to make the system better so we can all get around the city safely, quickly and in a less stressful way.

The first piece of activism I ever got involved in was when Dublin City Council turned off the audible traffic lights. The blind community in Dublin mobilised and we got the decision reversed. It was a proud moment for me and showed what can be achieved when people work together.
