Coombe’s refusal to provide abortion care is completely unacceptable

The Chair of the Labour Women Executive, Ellen O’Sullivan, has described the refusal of the Coombe hospital to provide termination in the case of fatal foetal abnormality as completely unacceptable.

Ms O’Sullivan said:

“We are deeply frustrated and saddened by the news emerging that a woman with a fatal foetal abnormality was refused an abortion at the Coombe hospital, despite having the requisite confirmation from two consultants.

“The 8th Amendment was repealed by an overwhelming majority in May 2018, over 7 months ago. Women of Ireland waited long enough for abortion services to be made available from the 1st of January this year.

“It is unacceptable for one of Dublin’s main maternity hospitals to claim they want ‘confidence in the nationwide system’ before they provide abortions when there are women who simply cannot wait.”
