Govt housing strategy cuckoo crazy – Fianna Fáil talking out of both sides of its mouth
Labour housing spokesperson Rebecca Moynihan has said the Government is talking out of both sides of its mouth on investor funds and is continuing to incentivise private investors in the delivery of social housing.
Senator Moynihan said:
“People will wake up very disappointed today to see that the five wasted years of Fine Gael and Fianna Fáil housing policy looks set to continue.
“Fianna Fáil talk big on housing. They talk about delivering social housing but last nights vote shows they will continue to rely on, and incentivise the private sector with tax breaks to provide social housing. The Taoiseach “called on” local authorities in the Dáil to not lease from investor funds, but last night when he could have taken action what they decided to was give a tax break to facilitate investor profit from a social need.
“We need to end the dominance of cuckoo funds in the housing market and increase the supply of affordable housing for purchase and for rent. If the arms of the State could be extended to the housing crisis in the way it extended to the health crisis we could be in a much better place. But last night the mask slipped on the big talk of the Government and showed they are still wedded to investor profit from social housing.”
