A vote for Fine Gael is a vote for Ursula Von Der Leyen
Labour’s Eurocandidate for Ireland South, Niamh Hourigan has today warned that a vote for Fine Gael is unequivocally a vote for Ursula Von Der Leyen.
Niamh Hourigan said,
“Casting a ballot for Fine Gael in the European elections on Friday means endorsing Ursula Von Der Leyen’s military-driven and insular approach to Europe. Her response to the war in Gaza has been nothing short of disgraceful and does not reflect Ireland’s position or values, as she has continued to support Israel despite their on-going bombardment.
“The Socialists and Democrats Group (S&D), which Labour is aligned with, is the only force capable of challenging the European People’s Party (EPP) led by Von Der Leyen.
“Ursula Von Der Leyen’s actions have clearly demonstrated she has no aspirations for real peace. Her rhetoric is dangerous and does not represent the values we hold dear in Ireland. A vote for Fine Gael is a vote for a Commission that prioritises military interests, something we utterly oppose.
“Separately, a vote for independents is a gamble. We know that Ursula Von Der Leyen will be vying for their support to push her agenda. Ireland cannot afford to take that risk.
“This election is critical. We need MEPs who will fight for peace, for diplomacy, and for a Europe that truly represents its foundational values.”
