Heartbreaking findings demand urgent action to combat loneliness among older adults
Labour’s Councillor Martha Fanning has called for immediate action following the publication of new research by the Irish Longitudinal Study on Ageing (TILDA) at Trinity College Dublin, revealing the devastating impact of loneliness on older adults. The study, released yesterday, shows a strong association between loneliness and an increased risk of individuals wishing for their own death. Shockingly, the research also highlights that 10% of respondents exhibited clinically significant levels of depression.
Cllr Fanning said:
“It is truly heartbreaking to hear the results of this research. Loneliness is a silent epidemic, with devastating consequences for mental health and well-being. The fact that some 10% of respondents are struggling with clinically significant levels of depression is a clear indication that we are failing our older citizens. This should be a wake-up call for all of us.
“As I’ve been knocking on doors in my local area, it’s become painfully clear how widespread loneliness is. It’s in every neighbourhood, affecting people from all walks of life. This research brings to light what so many of us have known for some time—loneliness is not just a personal issue; it’s a public health crisis.
“Ireland’s Loneliness Taskforce made a reasonable and urgent request for €5 million in Budget 2024. Sadly, the Government did not see this as a priority. This is a missed opportunity to invest in the well-being of our older citizens and to take meaningful steps towards addressing this crisis.
“Our local authorities must be empowered to fight loneliness head-on. Our parks, playgrounds, libraries, and community centres are more than just facilities—they are lifelines for many people. These spaces should be central to our battle against loneliness, providing safe and welcoming environments where people can connect and engage with their communities.
“The time for action is now. We cannot afford to delay any longer. The Government must prioritise funding for the Loneliness Taskforce in Budget 2025 and ensure that our local authorities have the resources they need to support our most vulnerable citizens. Loneliness is a growing epidemic, but it is one that we can address with the right investment and commitment.”
