Uncertainty only certainty in labour market under Trump - The Labour Party
Labour’s Enterprise Spokesperson George Lawlor TD has expressed deep concern following confirmation that Intel will let up to 195 workers go from its Irish operations, after months of speculation. The news marks a major blow for Ireland’s tech sector and raises serious questions about how this Government is supporting workers during large-scale corporate restructurings. Deputy Lawlor has renewed Labour’s call to increase the statutory redundancy cap, and to ensure better protections and communication for workers during consultation periods.
Deputy Lawlor said:
“Ireland’s economy relies heavily on our multinational sector. When a company like Intel – confirms job cuts, the consequences reach far beyond those receiving redundancy notices. It affects local shops, cafés, childcare providers, – the knock-on impact for communities will be harsh.
“The workers affected are not just numbers. These are the people who helped build Intel’s Irish base into one of its most important global hubs. They deserve certainty, respect, and full information during this stressful time.
“Labour has consistently called for stronger protections and real consultation during restructurings. The Government must stop treating these issues as isolated events and start building a system that puts workers first.
“We in Labour have long called for the weekly cap on statutory redundancy payments to rise from €600 to €1,000. This limit hasn’t moved in 20 years. It’s not fit for today’s cost of living and does not reflect the real impact job loss has on a household. The Minister must act now to give workers the security they deserve.
“Labour is calling on the Government to bring forward urgent reforms to redundancy protections, improve communication requirements during consultation periods, and finally raise the redundancy cap to reflect the economic reality of today’s Ireland.”
