Labour welcomes RTÉ’s stance on Eurovision - The Labour Party

  • Time to isolate Israel on global stage

Labour’s Arts and Culture Spokesperson Rob O’Donoghue TD has today welcomed reports that RTÉ may withdraw from the Eurovision Song Contest if Israel is permitted to take part. This significant move comes at a time when the world has looked on in horror at the live-streamed genocide taking place in Gaza. Deputy O’Donoghue said the decision is an important development in Ireland’s cultural and political response to Israel’s actions.
Deputy O’Donoghue said:
“RTÉ’s stance is an important and very welcome development. What we are witnessing in Gaza is a genocide in real time, broadcast on our phones and screens every single day. Ireland has a proud tradition of standing on the side of justice and this is another moment where we must show leadership.
“The Labour Party has consistently called for Israel to be isolated internationally – culturally, in sport and in academia. Every global forum matters, whether it is football, universities, or Eurovision.
“Just as South Africa was isolated during apartheid, Israel must face consequences for its actions. Cultural boycotts are a powerful tool of solidarity, and RTÉ’s stance is a step in the right direction.”
