Statement by the Labour Party on the death of Glen Hansard - The Labour Party
Labour Party spokesperson for the arts Rob O’Donoghue TD has expressed his sympathy to the family, friends, loved ones and wider Irish music community on the untimely passing of Glen Hansard.
Deputy O’Donoghue said:
“I am deeply saddened to hear of the sudden death of renowned Irish artist Glen Hansard. My thoughts are first and foremost with his wife and child, his family, his friends and the wider music community in Ireland, all of whom will mourn his loss.
“As the frontman of the Frames, Glen Hansard has left an indelible mark on arts and culture in Ireland.
“The success of the song “Falling Slowly” at the 2008 Oscars was a triumph not only for Ireland but for aspiring musicians everywhere.
“From starting his career busking on the streets of Dublin, to his recent concert as part of the Trinity Summer Series in July of this year, Hansard’s career spanned more than three decades during which he made an immeasurable contribution to Irish music and to Irish cultural life.
“Hansard was a staunch activist, well-known for the occupation of Apollo House in Dublin, as well as his annual Christmas Eve busking in Dublin to raise funds for homeless charities. This Christmas tradition was so deeply cherished by Dubliners and the people whose lives he sought to improve.
“His music, his activism and his generosity of spirit will endure long after this passing. May he rest in peace.”
