Airbnb compounding Dublin housing crisis
Airbnb compounding Dublin housing crisis - The Labour Party
Labour’s Councillor Fiona Connelly has secured the passing of her motion at Dublin City Council calling for urgent action to limit the impact of Airbnb on the housing crisis in Dublin. Speaking after the motion passed on 23rd September, Councillor Connelly said that Airbnb is fuelling the shortage of affordable rental homes and that Dublin City Council must act swiftly to strengthen governance of short-term lets.
Councillor Connelly said:
“Airbnb presents a clear issue that is compounding the housing crisis in our city. Across Europe, cities have acted decisively to restrict short-term lets, recognising the damaging effect they have on local housing markets. It is now time for Dublin to follow suit. I am calling on Dublin City Council to identify and implement measures to curb the excessive use of Airbnb so that homes can be made available to renters who need them.
“The reality is that far too many families and individuals are locked out of the rental market because so many properties are being diverted into the short-term lettings market. Dubliners deserve secure, affordable homes under fair rental agreements. Without stronger governance, the imbalance between housing for tourists and housing for residents will only worsen. Other European countries have shown leadership in tackling this problem, and Dublin must not fall behind.
“I am calling on Dublin City Council to allocate the necessary resources and funds to strengthen the governance of short-term rentals such as Airbnb. We need robust enforcement, proper oversight, and a fair rental system. The time to act is now.”
Motion submitted by Cllr. Fiona Connelly
Airbnb presents as an issue that is compounding the housing crisis in our city. Other European cities have moved to increase restrictions on Airbnb operating in their cities. I call on DCC to identify what can be done to limit the use of Airbnb in Dublin City and further call that this committee agree to support limiting the prevalence of Airbnb in Dublin so that people have more opportunities to secure a rental agreement under fair terms. I call on Dublin City Council to allocate the necessary resources and funds to strengthen the governance of short term rentals such as Airbnb in our city.
