Explosive audio contradicts Government claims on rent changes - The Labour Party

  • Audio evidence from doorbell shows landlord using new Government rent rules to evict tenants
  • Contradicts repeated claims by the Taoiseach and Housing Minister

Labour TD for Wexford George Lawlor has said that the audio of a landlord telling a tenant they are selling the property because of the Government’s new rent rules exposes the truth behind a wave of eviction notices in Wexford.

Deputy Lawlor said:

“For weeks now the Taoiseach and the Minister for Housing have tried to dismiss concerns about the impact of their new rent rules. They have insisted that tenants being forced out of their homes has nothing to do with the changes they pushed through. The audio that has now emerged on SouthEast Radio tells a very different story. In the recording, an agent for a landlord clearly tells a tenant that they are selling the property because of the new rental rules introduced by Government. That is the reality on the ground. It is straight from the horse’s mouth.

“What makes this even more damning is that this situation is unfolding here in Wexford, the Minister for Housing’s own backyard. We already know that 36 Notices of Termination have been issued by one landlord locally. Now we have direct evidence showing that landlords are linking their decision to sell with the Government’s policy changes. This is an absolute disgrace.

“Government cannot continue to pretend this is not happening. The evidence is there and the human consequences are clear. Ministers must stop the spin, accept that their rent changes are driving instability in the rental market, and urgently bring forward measures that actually protect tenants from losing their homes. Families in Wexford and across the country deserve honesty and immediate action from Government before more people are forced out of the places they call home.”
