Working people must see immediate reductions at the forecourt following release of oil reserves - The Labour Party
Labour’s enterprise spokesperson George Lawlor TD said fuel retailers need to drive down prices for consumers in recognition of the release of oil reserves.
Deputy Lawlor said:
“It’s welcome that the IEA has recommended the releasing of oil reserves and people need to feel that and see that on the forecourts right away. Labour called on Government to release a quantity of our petroleum reserves as part of a suite of cost of living measures to protect people from the immediate shock of the conflict in the Middle East.
“The speed at which price gouging happened across the country in the days following the outbreak of the war in Iran was disgraceful but now there can be no excuses. Consumers need to see an immediate reduction in the price of filling their cars.
“The surge in fuel prices triggered by instability in the Middle East is a stark reminder of just how exposed Irish households remain to global shocks. Time and again, workers here are expected to absorb the consequences of geopolitical upheaval through higher petrol prices, higher heating costs and more expensive commutes.
“Government has been far too late in dealing with this crisis head on. There are practical measures that could be delivered quickly through the tax and social welfare systems. The real question is not whether government can act. It is whether it is willing to prioritise ordinary workers over comfortable inertia.”
