Labour eviction ban Bill targets soaring termination notices
Labour eviction ban Bill targets soaring termination notices - The Labour Party
Labour housing spokesperson Deputy Conor Sheehan will tomorrow introduce the The Residential Tenancies (Temporary Prohibition of Termination Notices) Bill 2026 in the Dáil to impose a three-year ban on no-fault evictions, warning that record homelessness and soaring eviction notices demand urgent and decisive Government action, and calling on all TDs to back the Bill to give renters immediate protection and stability.
Deputy Sheehan said:
“Tomorrow I will introduce legislation that delivers what renters across the country are crying out for, a three-year ban on no-fault evictions to stop the relentless churn pushing people into homelessness. Renters deserve stability and security in their homes, not constant fear of eviction through no fault of their own. We are living through the worst housing crisis in the history of the State, with homelessness at record levels and eviction notices rising at an alarming rate. Figures from the Residential Tenancies Board show termination notices increased by 41% in the final months of 2025 and by 21% over the year, a stark indication of a rental market that is failing tenants at every turn.
“The time for talking is over. We cannot continue to tolerate a system where people are one notice away from homelessness. We have seen rents double over the past decade and rise dramatically since the pandemic, while wages have not kept pace. People are being squeezed out of their homes and out of their communities. This is not sustainable and it is not acceptable.
“What I am proposing is practical, targeted and necessary. It mirrors emergency measures taken during the pandemic because the reality for renters today is just as severe. This is about recognising the scale of the crisis and acting accordingly. We need to make evictions a thing of the past, not a routine feature of a broken housing system.
“I am urging all TDs to back this Bill and stand with renters who are under unprecedented pressure. Government cannot continue to delay while people lose their homes. We need immediate intervention, and we need it now. Passing this legislation would send a clear message that protecting people in their homes is a priority and that we are serious about tackling the housing emergency head on.”
