The Labour Party endorses human rights campaigner Maeve O’Rourke in the Seanad bye-election - The Labour Party
The Labour Parliamentary Party is proud to announce its endorsement of Maeve O’Rourke in the forthcoming Seanad bye-election campaign on the Cultural and Educational panel.
The Labour Party met at lunchtime on Tuesday 13th October with Maeve O’Rourke, when it agreed to endorse her nomination.
Speaking today, Labour Party leader Ivana Bacik TD said:
“The Labour Party is proud to endorse Maeve O’Rourke, an outstanding independent candidate for the Seanad bye-election.
“Maeve has an impeccable track record as an academic and activist on a range of human rights campaigns. Her work was crucial in achieving the vindication of the rights of survivors of mother and baby homes and Magdalene institutions, and in securing information rights for adoptees. She is a powerful advocate for the disadvantaged in our society.
“At our recent Parliamentary Party meeting with Maeve, we were particularly impressed by her integrity and her unique ability to communicate complex legal concepts in a clear, coherent and accessible manner.
“Maeve would make an enormous contribution to public life in Seanad Eireann. Her values chime with those of the Labour Party – equality, solidarity and fairness.
“I believe Maeve will make a fantastic Senator and would urge all TDs and Senators, including those from Government parties, to lend Maeve their vote in the forthcoming election.”
