Labour arts spokesperson Rob O’Donoghue TD has expressed his strong support for the artists who have withdrawn from Ed Sheeran’s tour in solidarity with Macklemore, after the US rapper was removed from the remaining US dates following comments in support of Palestine at MetLife Stadium in New Jersey earlier this month.
Deputy O’Donoghue said:
“Walking away from the opportunity to perform on a stadium tour with one of the biggest artists in the world is no mean feat. Aaron Rowe and Beoga deserve enormous credit for taking a stand, as do the other artists. It takes courage to walk away from an opportunity of this scale. Their solidarity sends a powerful message to the Palestinian people.
“Artists have always played an important role in challenging injustice and drawing public attention to events that those in positions of power might prefer to ignore. People in Ireland have consistently stood with the Palestinian people. We have seen that solidarity again and again in communities and on our streets.
“At a time when the Palestinian people continue to endure unimaginable suffering, we cannot look away. We must continue to stand up for the people of Palestine and speak out against genocide.”
